Celebrating Our Blessed Mother: Simple Ways to Honor Mary This Week
Every year on September 8, the Catholic Church celebrates the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary — the birthday of the woman who would say “yes” to God and become the mother of Jesus Christ.
While Scripture does not tell us the date of Mary’s birth, the Church has celebrated her Nativity for centuries. And although her feast day has passed, celebrating Mary doesn’t have to end when September 8 does.
In fact, this week is a beautiful opportunity to spend a little more time with the woman who continually points us toward her Son.
Why Do We Celebrate Mary’s Birthday?
When we celebrate Mary, we are ultimately celebrating what God accomplished through her.
Mary’s life was marked by extraordinary faith in circumstances that were anything but easy. At the Annunciation, she was asked to trust God without knowing exactly what her “yes” would mean. She carried Jesus, raised Him, followed Him throughout His ministry and remained near Him at the foot of the Cross.
Her story is one of trust, humility, courage and profound love for God.
Mary never asks us to stop with her. Her entire life directs us toward Jesus. Her words at the Wedding at Cana still offer us one of the simplest instructions for Christian life:
“Do whatever He tells you.” — John 2:5
So, in honor of our Blessed Mother’s birthday, here are a few simple ways we can follow her example and grow closer to Christ this week.
1. Pray the Rosary
One of the most meaningful ways to honor Mary is also one of the simplest: pray the Rosary.
You don’t need perfect concentration or an hour of uninterrupted silence. Start with one decade if that is what you can manage.
As we pray the Rosary, we meditate on the life of Jesus through the eyes of His mother — from the joy of His birth to His suffering, Resurrection and glory.
And if you’d rather not pray alone, join us for the Mary Lives weekly Rosary on Zoom every Monday at 7 PM EST.
Come exactly as you are. Bring your intentions, your worries, your gratitude and the people you’re praying for.
2. Spend Time With Mary's “Yes”
Take a few minutes this week to read the story of the Annunciation in Luke 1:26–38.
Then ask yourself a simple question:
Where might God be asking me to say yes right now?
It may not be something dramatic. Perhaps it is forgiving someone, reaching out to a person who is struggling, returning to prayer, being more patient with your family or trusting God with something you cannot control.
Mary reminds us that one faithful “yes” can become part of something much greater than we can see.
3. Do Something Quietly for Someone Else
Mary’s life was filled with acts of humble service.
After learning that she would become the mother of Jesus, she traveled to help her cousin Elizabeth. At Cana, she noticed a need before anyone asked her to intervene.
Honor Mary this week by doing something kind without expecting recognition for it.
Call someone who has been lonely. Bring a meal to a family going through a difficult season. Send an encouraging message. Pray for someone who may never know you prayed for them.
Small acts of love matter.
4. Bring a Worry to Mary
Sometimes prayer becomes complicated because we think we need the right words.
We don't.
If something has been weighing heavily on your heart, bring it to Mary and ask for her intercession. Then place it before Jesus.
You might simply pray:
Blessed Mother, you know what it means to trust God without knowing what comes next. Pray for me, that I may trust your Son with what I cannot control.
5. Learn Something New About Mary
Mary’s story stretches far beyond the Nativity scene.
This week, spend a little time learning about one of her feast days, titles or approved apparitions. Read about Our Lady of Lourdes, Our Lady of Fatima, Our Lady of Guadalupe, Our Lady of Sorrows or another Marian devotion you have always wondered about.
You may discover a new way of understanding Mary — and through her, a new way of encountering Christ.
6. Give Jesus a Birthday Gift for His Mother
What do you give the Blessed Mother for her birthday?
Perhaps the best gift is something she has always wanted from us: a closer relationship with her Son.
Go to Mass. Spend a few quiet minutes with Jesus. Return to Confession if it has been a while. Open the Bible. Pray with your family. Forgive someone. Begin the Rosary again.
It doesn't have to be elaborate.
Mary's life reminds us that God can do extraordinary things with simple acts of faith.
Happy Birthday, Blessed Mother
Mary's birthday gives us a reason to celebrate, but it also gives us an opportunity to reflect on the kind of faith she lived.
A faith that said yes.
A faith that trusted.
A faith that remained beside Jesus through joy, uncertainty and unimaginable sorrow.
This week, let’s honor our Blessed Mother by asking for her prayers, following her example and, most importantly, allowing her to lead us closer to Jesus.
Happy Birthday, Blessed Mother. Pray for us and help us always keep our eyes on your Son.
