Saints of Mary: St. Louis de Montfort: Teacher of True Devotion

Throughout the history of the Church, God has raised up saints who help us better understand the role of the Blessed Mother in our spiritual lives. Among the most influential was St. Louis de Montfort, a priest whose love for Mary continues to inspire millions of Catholics around the world.

St. Louis believed that the surest, safest, and fastest way to Jesus is through His Mother.

At a time when many misunderstood devotion to Mary, Louis dedicated his life to teaching the beauty of entrusting ourselves completely to her care. He saw Mary not as a distraction from Jesus, but as the one who leads us most perfectly to Him.

His most famous work, True Devotion to Mary, remains one of the most beloved books on Marian spirituality ever written. In its pages, Louis explains how giving ourselves fully to Mary helps us belong more completely to Christ.

For St. Louis, devotion to Mary was not merely a prayer practice—it was a way of life.

He taught that just as God chose to come into the world through Mary, we too can draw closer to Jesus by placing ourselves in her hands. He encouraged Christians to entrust every aspect of their lives to Our Lady, allowing her to shape their hearts and lead them more deeply into God's will.

His teachings would later have a profound impact on many saints, including St. John Paul II, whose papal motto, Totus Tuus ("Totally Yours"), was inspired directly by St. Louis de Montfort's writings on Marian consecration.

Throughout his ministry, Louis preached tirelessly, traveled extensively, and endured opposition for sharing the Gospel. Yet through every challenge, Mary remained his guide, his comfort, and his greatest joy.
